Flea allergy dermatitis is an allergic reaction to proteins in flea saliva, and it's the most commonly missed cause of itching in Indian dogs. A single bite can set off a week of scratching in a sensitised dog. The giveaway is where it itches: the base of the tail, the rump, and the back of the thighs.
Here's the part that costs people months. You do not need to see fleas for this to be the answer.
Why you won't find the fleas
Adult fleas on the dog are a small fraction of the total population. The overwhelming majority exists as eggs, larvae and pupae sitting in your carpets, bedding, sofa seams and floor cracks.
A dog that grooms itself well eats most of the adults it catches. So you see the damage and never the culprit.
An allergic dog also reacts to a bite load far below what a non allergic dog tolerates without a flicker. Two dogs in the same house, one covered in fleas and comfortable, one apparently flea free and miserable. That's normal.

The flea dirt test
This takes two minutes and settles the question better than staring at your dog's belly.
Comb firmly over the rump and the base of the tail with a fine toothed comb. Tap whatever comes out onto a damp white tissue.
Black specks that stay black are dirt. Black specks that smear reddish brown are flea faeces, which is digested blood. That's a positive result and it means fleas, whether or not you ever see one.
What it looks like
The distribution is the diagnosis here, more than the appearance.
- Base of the tail and rump, the classic triangle
- Back of the thighs and the belly
- Hair loss from chewing rather than from the bites themselves
- Small scabs you feel before you see, often described as feeling like grains of sand under the coat
- In long standing cases, thickened darkened skin over the lower back
Compare that with environmental allergy, which concentrates on paws, muzzle, ears and armpits. Different map, different problem.
India makes this harder
In most of the country fleas breed year round rather than seasonally. There's no winter cold snap long enough to break the cycle the way there is in Europe or North America.
Humidity accelerates it. Monsoon is peak season, and pupae can sit dormant for months waiting for warmth and vibration before hatching, which is why a house that seemed clear suddenly isn't.
Dogs that meet street dogs on walks get reinfested continuously. That's not an argument against walks. It's an argument for year round prevention.
What actually clears it
Three things at once, and skipping any one of them is why people say prevention "didn't work".
Every pet in the house, every month
The cat that goes on the balcony counts. Use a vet recommended product and keep it going through winter.
The environment
Wash all bedding in hot water, and vacuum thoroughly along edges, under furniture and against the skirting, emptying the vacuum outside afterwards. Repeat weekly for at least two months, because you're waiting out the pupae.
Time
Even a perfect protocol takes eight to twelve weeks to break the life cycle. If you judge it at three weeks you'll conclude it failed.
Why the timing catches everyone out
Flea prevention has a reputation for not working, and almost every case we hear about comes down to the same three timing mistakes.
Judging it too early
Adults on the dog die quickly. The eggs and pupae in your floor do not. Weeks three and four often look worse than week one because a new batch has hatched, and that is exactly when people quit.
Stopping in winter
In most of India there is no cold snap long enough to break the cycle. A three month winter gap hands the population a free run.
Missing one animal
The cat nobody thinks of, the puppy who arrived in month two, the dog who visits on weekends. One untreated animal keeps the whole house stocked.
Set a monthly reminder on your phone, put every animal on the same date, and hold it for a full year before you judge whether it worked.
What doesn't work
Garlic in food. It doesn't repel fleas, and in enough quantity it damages red blood cells in dogs.
Neem oil as your only prevention. It has some repellent effect and it's genuinely popular in Indian homes, but it won't break an established infestation on its own.
Bathing as a strategy. It drowns the adults on board today and does nothing about the 95% waiting in the carpet.
Treating only the itchy dog. The other pets are the reservoir.
Where nutrition fits, honestly
Supriyo Das has a Labrador and a Cocker Spaniel. What he wrote back was short: the scratching and biting at the toes had stopped completely, and the stool was rarely loose any more.

When to see a vet
Flea allergy is diagnosed by a vet, and severe cases often need medication to break the itch cycle before anything else helps. Book an appointment for:

- Itching that continues after eight to twelve weeks of correct prevention on every pet
- Any dog scratching hard enough to disrupt sleep
