Your dog lets out a smell that clears the room, and then looks at you like nothing happened. You laugh the first time. By the fourth night in a row, you are sitting on Google at 11pm wondering if something is actually wrong.
Quick answer
Most dog gas in India comes from eating too fast, milk and curd, table scraps with masala, sudden food changes, or stress. Try 2 to 3 days of plain rice and boiled chicken, slow-feed the meal, and add a daily probiotic. Give the probiotic 8 to 12 weeks before you judge. A bloated or swollen belly is not a home-remedy case: see the red box below.
See your vet IMMEDIATELY if you notice:
- A hard, swollen, drum-tight belly that came up suddenly
- Restlessness, pacing, drooling, or trying to vomit with nothing coming out
- Pale gums, collapse, or fast shallow breathing
- Continuous vomiting or bloody stool
These can be signs of GDV (gastric torsion). It is an emergency: go to a vet immediately, do not wait.
Everyday gas vs the emergency kind
Most gas is boring. It is just your dog's gut bacteria fermenting food and pushing air out. Smelly, sometimes funny, almost always harmless.
The dangerous version is different. It is called GDV, and it shows up fast, a tight swollen belly, a dog that cannot settle, drool, and dry heaving. Large, deep-chested breeds like German Shepherds and Great Danes are at higher risk. If you ever see this picture, skip the home remedies and drive to the vet.
For the rest of this guide, we are talking about the everyday kind. The 11pm farting on the sofa kind.
Why Indian dogs get gassy: the real reasons
Most cases come down to one of five things. We see the same pattern across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Pune, every city.
1. Eating too fast
Labs, Beagles, Pugs, Indies, they inhale food. Air goes in with every gulp. Air has to come out somewhere.
2. Milk, curd, and paneer
Indian kitchens lean on dairy. Most adult dogs are lactose intolerant. A spoon of dahi on the rice feels generous to us, but it lands as gas and loose stool for your dog.
3. Roti, rice, sabzi from the family thali
The masala, oil, and salt that make our food taste right are exactly what irritates a dog's gut. Even a small piece of sabzi roti, given daily, adds up.
4. Sudden food brand change
Switching kibble overnight is one of the most common causes of gas and soft stool we hear about. Always transition over 7 to 10 days, mixing old and new.
5. Stress
Diwali crackers, Holi crowds, monsoon thunder, a new baby at home. Stress moves the gut. Gas and irregular stool often follow.
Food comes first for a reason. A 2019 Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine systematic review of probiotics for gut disease in dogs looked at 17 studies. For sudden tummy upsets, it found only a very limited and possibly clinically unimportant effect from probiotics. For long-running gut problems, diet mattered most and probiotics added no significant improvement. Most of the studies were small.

Safe home remedies that actually help
Some of the kitchen advice floating around online is genuinely risky. We will keep this short and safe.
Do these
- Bland meal for 2 to 3 days. Plain white rice with a small amount of boiled boneless chicken. No masala, no oil, no curd, no haldi. Small portions, 3 to 4 times a day.
- Slow down the eating. Use a slow-feed bowl, or spread the kibble on a flat plate, or put a tennis ball in the bowl. Anything that forces chewing.
- Smaller, more frequent meals. Two meals split into three. Less volume per sitting means less fermentation at once.
- Fresh water always. Bowl cleaned daily.
- Short walks after meals. Just to help things move. No sprinting, no fetch right after eating.
- A daily dog-specific probiotic. More on this below.
Please do not do these
- Do not give dahi, curd, or milk to "settle" the stomach. It usually makes gas worse.
- Do not give raw haldi paste or apple cider vinegar. Most Indian pet parents have haldi in their kitchen, the issue is not the ingredient, it is the dose and absorption. Raw kitchen turmeric is poorly absorbed by dogs and is not a substitute for a measured supplement. High-dose turmeric paste can cause GI upset or interact with medications, and garlic, raw or cooked, can damage a dog's red blood cells, so never give it. Talk to your vet before giving any kitchen ingredient as a remedy.
- Do not give coconut oil internally. It can trigger pancreatitis.
- Do not give human gas medicines or antacids without vet guidance.
What a daily Pre+Probiotic actually does
The gut is a community. Billions of good and bad bacteria, all competing for space. When that community is unbalanced, gas, smell, and soft stool can follow.
A probiotic adds the good bacteria back in. A prebiotic is the fiber food that feeds them.
A 2019 Frontiers in Immunology study on probiotics for canine gut health gave 90 elderly, young, and working dogs either a three-strain probiotic feed additive or none for 60 days. The probiotic raised food intake in the elderly dogs and weight gain in all groups, raised some immune markers, and in the elderly dogs shifted gut bacteria towards helpful species. It did not measure gas or stools, so it cannot tell us about those.
Our K9 Vitality Pre+Probiotics is a powder, not a chew. 12 strains of live probiotics plus prebiotic fiber. You mix a daily scoop based on your dog's weight into food. That is the whole routine.
Honest line: this is not a 3-day fix. Give it 8 to 12 weeks before you judge. Time lagta hai. If you want fast, you want a vet visit, not a supplement.

How to start: dosage and the first 4 weeks
Dosage by weight
| Dog's Weight | Daily Amount |
|---|---|
| Below 11 kg | Less than half a scoop |
| 11-26 kg | 1 scoop |
| 27-45 kg | 2 scoops |
| 46 kg and above | 3 scoops |
Mix into food daily. Start with half the recommended amount for the first week, then move to the full dose. Suitable for dogs 4 months and older. 90-day money back guarantee. Do not start during active vomiting or diarrhea, wait until your dog has been symptom-free for 24 to 48 hours.
When to see your vet
Home routines work for the everyday kind of gas. They do not work for everything. Please book a vet visit if you see any of these:
- Gas with loose stool that does not improve in 3 to 4 days
- Blood in stool, or black tarry stool: see your vet the same day
- Vomiting more than once or twice
- Belly that looks visibly swollen or feels tight: go to the vet immediately, do not wait for an appointment
- Loss of appetite for more than a day
- Weight loss over a few weeks
- Lethargy, hiding, or shivering with the gas: see your vet the same day
- Any sign of GDV from the red box above: go to the vet immediately, no waiting
A supplement supports the gut. It does not replace a diagnosis.
Pre+Probiotic vs other things people try
| Approach | What it actually does |
|---|---|
| Curd / dahi | Often worsens gas because most dogs cannot digest dairy |
| Human probiotic capsules | Made and dosed for people, not dogs |
| Antibiotics from a previous prescription | Never reuse. Wipes good bacteria too, and creates resistance |
| Dog-specific Pre+Probiotic powder | Adds 12 canine-friendly strains plus prebiotic fiber. Slow, steady rebuild |
Key takeaways
- Most dog gas is harmless fermentation, not an emergency
- A hard swollen belly with restlessness and dry heaving is GDV, drive to the vet
- Skip dahi, masala food, and human gas medicine. Slow the eating instead
- Give a daily dog-specific Pre+Probiotic 8 to 12 weeks before you judge it
- If gas comes with blood, vomiting, or weight loss, see your vet
